Nantong University is located in Nantong City, Jiangsu Province, which is among the first to open to the outside world in China and the northern economic center of Shanghai. The university is a comprehensive one jointly built by the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Transport of the People's Republic of China. It ranks 111 in ESI and 122 in the China Academy of Management Sciences' Evaluation of Chinese Universities in 2019.

In 2018, Nantong University set the goal of “8050”. It means, Nantong University will rank among the top 80 in China through relentless efforts by 2023 in terms of  overall strength and core competitiveness and  among the top 50 by 2032( the 120^th anniversary of its founding), becoming a top-notch university in China.
