The School of Liberal Arts traces its origins to the Chinese Department established in 1958 at Nantong Teachers College. It has evolved through various stages, including the Chinese Department of Nantong Normal College and the School of Liberal Arts of Nantong University. Today, it has developed a complete educational system encompassing college-level programs, undergraduate studies, as well as master’s and doctoral degree offerings, building a profound academic foundation.

The school boasts a strong faculty of 98 staff members, including 82 full-time teachers. Among them, there are 25 professors and 29 associate professors, with 68 holding doctoral degrees. The faculty includes:

  • 1 National Teaching Master

  • 6 high-level talents under Jiangsu Province’s “333 Project”

  • 7 academic leaders and outstanding young backbone teachers under Jiangsu’s “Qinglan Project”

  • 1 innovative talent from world-renowned overseas universities in Jiangsu Province

  • 2 high-level talents under Jiangsu’s “Six Talent Peaks”

  • 1 Jiangsu Provincial Social Sciences Elite Scholar

  • 1 Jiangsu Provincial Outstanding Young Social Sciences Scholar

The school also has:

  • 1 national-level outstanding teaching team

  • 1 scientific and technological innovation team under the provincial “Qinglan Project”

  • 1 provincial-level outstanding teaching team in higher education

These form a highly capable teaching and research faculty.

Adhering to an open approach in education, the school has built a solid academic platform and achieved abundant research outcomes. It holds a master’s degree authorization for the first-level discipline of Chinese Language and Literature and has established two provincial-level research bases. In recent years, faculty members have presided over 32 National Social Science Fund projects (including 2 key projects) and 46 ministerial/provincial-level projects. They have published over 20 papers in authoritative journals such as Literary Review and Historical Research, authored more than 70 monographs, and received 11 provincial/ministerial-level outstanding achievement awards, continuously enhancing the discipline’s influence.

The school has achieved remarkable results in program development and talent cultivation. It currently offers four undergraduate programs: Chinese Language and Literature (Teacher Education), Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Secretarial Studies, and Journalism. Among these, Chinese Language and Literature is recognized as a national distinctive program and a national first-class undergraduate program. The discipline of Chinese Language and Literature has been selected for four consecutive terms as a key discipline in Jiangsu Province. Emphasizing comprehensive student development and innovation capability, student teams have won numerous national honors, including gold awards in the “Challenge Cup” National College Student Academic Science and Technology Competition and the “Create Youth” National College Student Entrepreneurship Competition. Graduates are highly regarded by all sectors of society.
