School of Mathematics and Statistics

2025-02-28

The School of Mathematics and Statistics was officially established in December 2023. Its predecessor was the School of Science of Nantong University, and its origins can be traced back to the Departments of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Basic Sciences of the former Nantong Medical College, Nantong Institute of Technology, and Nantong Normal College, reflecting a clear lineage and profound heritage.

The school boasts a strong faculty of 97 staff members, including 87 full-time teachers, among whom are 19 professors and 30 associate professors. All full-time teachers hold either doctoral or master’s degrees. The faculty includes 26 master’s supervisors and 6 doctoral supervisors, and features a group of high-level talents such as academic leaders under Jiangsu Province's "Qinglan Project", Jiangsu Distinguished Professors, and Hubei Province's "Chutian Scholar" Distinguished Professors, forming a teaching and research team with strong academic capabilities and high professional quality.

The school is grounded in disciplinary frontiers, supported by solid research platforms, and exhibits distinct international characteristics. It offers a master's program in the first-level discipline of Mathematics and a professional master's program in Applied Statistics, and has been approved as a Jiangsu Provincial Statistical Science Research Base. Research teams have developed distinctive features in four key areas: Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research and Control Theory, and Applied Statistics & Data Science. In each direction, 100% of the team members hold doctoral degrees, and over 70% of the faculty have research or visiting experience at world-renowned universities such as the California Institute of Technology, the University of Surrey (UK), and Nanyang Technological University (Singapore). In the past five years, faculty have published nearly 300 SCI/EI-indexed papers and secured 23 national-level projects, including those from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Social Science Fund of China, demonstrating continuously growing research and innovation capabilities.

The school excels in program development and has achieved fruitful outcomes in talent cultivation. The Mathematics and Applied Mathematics (Teacher Education) program has passed the Level-2 certification for teacher education programs by the Ministry of Education. The Applied Statistics program is recognized as a provincial-level first-class undergraduate program in Jiangsu and includes a Sino-British joint training program with credit mutual recognition. The school is equipped with advanced teaching facilities such as a large-scale mathematical modeling laboratory and a high-performance computing center. Students have consistently won top awards in competitions such as the China Graduate Mathematical Modeling Contest, the National Undergraduate Mathematical Modeling Contest, the "Challenge Cup", and the Jiangsu Provincial Teaching Skills Competition for Normal University Students. Graduates are highly regarded by employers for their solid professional foundation and strong practical skills. In recent years, the average employment rate has remained above 98%, and the school has been repeatedly recognized as an outstanding unit for graduate employment at the university level.
