On the afternoon of September 6, with the sound of majestic national anthem, our university held the opening ceremony of postgraduates enrolled in 2019, from which thirty-four doctoral students, 1078 postgraduates and 44 international postgraduates will enter a new stage of life at the Nantong  University. President Shi Weidong attended the ceremony and delivered a speech and Vice President Dong Zhengchao presided over the ceremony, with attendance of school leaders Lu Guoping, Jiang Naihua and Jiang Peijian and the members of the Standing Committee of the School Party Committee, Wang Weidong and Ji Mingming。

First, on behalf of the school, President Shi Weidong extended a warm welcome to all postgraduate freshmen. Then, Shi Weidong introduced the “8050 Plan” determined by the Third Party Congress of Nantong University, and pointed out that the special features of our university, which, with a time-honored history and culture, a strong atmosphere for research and learning, advanced scientific and educational conditions, as well as an open platform for school running, has gathered such outstanding faculties as academicians, national famous teachers, national distinguished youth scholars, Olympic champions, etc. Here postgraduates can exchange views with their favorite professors, discussing advanced scientific issues, pursing their dreams.Concerning how to start a postgraduate career, Shi Weidong put forward his three hopes for postgraduate freshmen: the first one is to cultivate patriotic feelings. We should inherit the fine tradition of love and service for our country as one part of Nantong University, shape the character of with unswerving determination and self-reliance, and carry forward the spirit of always to be the pioneers, thus constantly building up willpower and enhancing the abilities; the second one is to aspire to seek truth and knowledge. Holding more perseverance and daring to be sharpened, we should withstand hardship and resist temptation, being able to buckle down and work hard; the third one is to persist in applying knowledge to practice. With problem consciousness in mind, focusing on realistic needs, we need to not only acquire knowledge, but also put it into practice, not only find problems but also solve them.

Shi Weidong’s expectation topostgraduate freshmen: with the heart of advocating truthfulness and great ambitions, all of them should cherish precious learning opportunities and actively engage in scientific research practice. Combining both Chinese and Western, pursing for improvements, all of them should have more stringent standards and a longer-term vision on themselves, so as to shape themselves into excellent postgraduates possessing firm ideal and faith,noble ethics and values, strong sense of social responsibility, highly innovative spirit, profound professional quality as well as open international vision, striving to become a new force in promoting scientific and technological innovation and a new generation to undertake national rejuvenation.

Professor Chen Gang from School  of Medicine as a representative of the supervisors delivered a speech, among which he shared his experience during his postgraduate period. Taking Professor Zhou Jianzhong, a star teacher of the national “Ten Thousand People Plan” and Professor Gu Xiaosong, an outstanding professor of our university and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, as examples, he hopes that all of postgraduates would work hard to live up to their youth with unremitting efforts to achieve their life goals, as well as aspiration to serve the country and fulfill their missions. Moreover, he encourages postgraduate freshmen to cherish the opportunity to study at Nantong  University, consciously hone and improve themselves in accordance with the requirements of the Party and the people, hereby realizing their life dreams in the fervent youth and accomplish their careers in the struggling youth.

Zhang Shuo, Master of Information and Communication Engineering enrolled in 2017 from School of Information Science and Technology, delivered a speech as a representative of the senior students. He expressed his suggestions that postgraduate freshmen adhere to the spirit of driving the nails in their scientific research life, find the cause of the problems, resolving them as a hammer drives a nail in right place, and dig into every parts; having the courage to making innovations, daring to and being willing to be the first, they should always keep abreast of the academic frontier, never forget that innovation is the first driving force for development; they should stay true to the mission of serving the people with people in mind and dedication to the country.

Yao Xiying, Master of Arts and Design enrolled in 2019, delivered a speech on behalf of postgraduate freshman of Nantong  University. Recalling her four years as an undergraduate, she was determined to integrate the spirit of traditional Chinese aesthetic spirit with contemporary life style in the future art design study, inheriting traditional handicrafts and extending modern crafts, as well as adopting contemporary themes, thus showcasing a new era, new fashions and new trend.

Wang Xiaodu, Master of Internal Medicine enrolled in 2019, spoke as a representative of international postgraduates, of which he shared his six-year medical undergraduate education experience at Nantong University, where he could learn the most advanced knowledge, conduct research in the best laboratories and equipment and discuss academics with his supervisor, unceasingly surmounting himself and moving towards a higher goal.

It is learned that there are many brilliant students among postgraduates freshmen, for instance, prominent “competition talents” Hong Shihao of School of Medicine, winning the silver award of the 3rd China College Students’ “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, Shi Jiaqi of School of Medicine, winning the silver award of the Provincial College Student’ Entrepreneurship Competition, Lin Fangdou of School of Science, winning the first prize of the 2018 “High Education Club” Cup National Undergraduate Mathematical Modeling Contest. winner of the competition; Tang Yue of School of Science, a “Model of Filial Piety” who donated marrow to save her mother during the preparation of postgraduate entrance examination; Zhang Ling, Zhang Rui, Ma Shuo and Wu Jiahao, volunteers of the 20th Mo Wensui Postgraduate Teaching Corps of our university, who had made contributions to the grassroots teaching; a 20-year-old graduate students, the youngest one in our university; foreign students from Morocco and Ghana in Northwest Africa, as well as new students from 27 provinces and municipalities in our country.

The opening ceremony was successfully completed among the chorus of Ode to the Motherland.

Heads of relevant functional departments of our university, heads of postgraduate education departments, representatives of supervisors, postgraduate counselors, postgraduate secretaries, etc. attended the ceremony.
